ST. MARK'S VOTES NOT TO ERECT CELL PHONE TOWER ON CHURCH PROPERTY
Last Wednesday, three members of the 'Concerned Mineola Community' steering committee were invited to St. Mark's to make a presentation on why the community was not supportive of a cell phone tower at the Church. The voting members of the church congregation listened respectfully and engaged the committee in meaningful dialogue. The Church voted that evening and decided not to erect a cell phone tower at St. Marks.
In a letter from Pastor Jeff, he writes:
"This decision was made out of love for our community. In our communications with you we heard how concerned and upset you were about potential health risks and property values. We must state that we did not and do not believe that cell phone towers are harmful. We would never have agreed to put one up if we did. But since many in our neighbourhood believe that they are harmful or potentially harmful, in love we have chosen to listen to you, our neighbours, and put your concerns first. Our primary ministry in this community is to proclaim Jesus Christ and his sacrificial death and resurrection for the salvation of mankind. We felt that the controversy and bad feelings generated by the tower might compromise this primary ministry of our congregation. All the money in the world is not worth it to us to erect the tower if our ministry for Jesus is compromised. Your communication with us helped us to see that this ministry would be in jeopardy if the tower was erected”
It was amazing for us to see how quickly this community got together and embraced a united voice. We would like to thank everyone who helped us communicate our message to St. Mark's. For those of you who wrote emails, made phone calls, delivered flyers, attended the rally, signed the petition, housed signs, or made donations - your efforts are greatly appreciated.
We have promised the church to assist with fundraising efforts so if you would like to volunteer your time please let us know (janhall@bell.net or claire.gornall@sympatico.ca)
Lastly, we have an open invitation from Pastor Jeff and the congregation to worship at St. Mark's any time. Services are on Sundays at 10am and the doors are always open.
