ST. MARK'S VOTES NOT TO ERECT CELL PHONE TOWER ON CHURCH PROPERTY

Last Wednesday, three members of the 'Concerned Mineola Community' steering committee were invited to St. Mark's to make a presentation on why the community was not supportive of a cell phone tower at the Church. The voting members of the church congregation listened respectfully and engaged the committee in meaningful dialogue. The Church voted that evening and decided not to erect a cell phone tower at St. Marks.

In a letter from Pastor Jeff, he writes:

"This decision was made out of love for our community.  In our communications with you we heard how concerned and upset you were about potential health risks and property values. We must state that we did not and do not believe that cell phone towers are harmful.  We would never have agreed to put one up if we did.  But since many in our neighbourhood believe that they are harmful or potentially harmful, in love we have chosen to listen to you, our neighbours, and put your concerns first. Our primary ministry in this community is to proclaim Jesus Christ and his sacrificial death and resurrection for the salvation of mankind.  We felt that the controversy and bad feelings generated by the tower might compromise this primary ministry of our congregation.  All the money in the world is not worth it to us to erect the tower if our ministry for Jesus is compromised.  Your communication with us helped us to see that this ministry would be in jeopardy if the tower was erected”

It was amazing for us to see how quickly this community got together and embraced a united voice. We would like to thank everyone who helped us communicate our message to St. Mark's. For those of you who wrote emails, made phone calls, delivered flyers, attended the rally, signed the petition, housed signs, or made donations - your efforts are greatly appreciated.

We have promised the church to assist with fundraising efforts so if you would like to volunteer your time please let us know (janhall@bell.net or claire.gornall@sympatico.ca)

Lastly, we have an open invitation from Pastor Jeff and the congregation to worship at St. Mark's any time. Services are on Sundays at 10am and the doors are always open.

THANK YOU!!!
Thank you so much to all of our supporters who came out to the rally!! You helped bring visibility to this issue and your presence made an impact! Thank you!  We will keep this website updated with information as we receive it, so please check back by the end of this coming week for an update.  In the meantime, please spread the word about our petition to your family and friends.

Thank you also to Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey for coming out today!

UPDATE JUNE 17th: Bell Canada Begins Digging in front of St. Mark’s Church; without St. Mark’s Knowledge

Please be aware that Bell Canada started digging in front of St. Mark’s church WITHOUT  the approval or knowledge of St. Mark’s Church.   St. Mark’s Church is surprised by this and disappointed that Bell Canada is not respecting the process they are trying to follow which includes:

·         Ongoing dialogue with the Committee and the community

·         Allowing the Committee to present to their voting members our concerns

·         Voting again on the decision to erect a cell phone tower

A call has been made to Jim Tovey’s office.  They are in dialogue with the city to find out what is going on.

The Committee is working closely with St. Mark’s Church to stop this Bell Canada work.  We will keep you updated via our website.

St. Mark’s Church to Erect Cell Phone Tower in August 2011

Right Beside Mineola Public School and Port Credit Secondary School

The Church of Saint Mark – Lutheran located at 130 Mineola East is planning to erect a cell phone tower or mobile phone base station on its’ property in August 2011.   The church is planning to lease their property to Bell Canada for 15 years for which they will receive approximately $15,000 dollars a year.   Currently, they intend to use the funds to further their mission work.

Our community is extremely concerned about placing a cell phone tower next to where children live, play, attend nursery school, primary school, high school and attend church services.

The Risks to Our Children

Studies into the health effects that emissions from cell phone towers have on children, while limited in number, do not rule out the possibility that children require greater protection from the potential risks.   In addition, many experts feel that studies on children need to be done considering health impacts other than cancer.

The potential vulnerability of children to radio frequency (RF) fields have been raised because of the potentially greater susceptibility of their developing nervous systems; in addition, their brain tissue is more conductive, RF penetration is greater relative to head size, and they will have a longer lifetime of exposure than adults.”  PEDIATRICS Vol. 116 No. 2 August 2005

What is being done to stop this?

  • The concerned community of Mineola East has formed a committee to organize our efforts to stop the erection of the cell phone tower.  As well as represent our communities concerns to the church, media, various levels of government and the Credit Reserve Association.
  • We have appealed to the church to reconsider leasing their land to Bell Canada for the erection of a cell phone tower and have offered to help the church raise funds to continue their mission work.
  • We have the support of Jim Tovey, Councillor Ward 1, City of Mississauga.
    • Unfortunately the placement of cell phone towers falls within the jurisdiction of the federal government and specifically Industry Canada.  A municipality has no jurisdiction over the placement of cell towers under 15 meters which require no permits.  Conveniently, this proposed cell tower is 14.9 meters.
  • We have the support Credit Reserve Association (local rate payers group).
  • We have contacted Stella Ambler, our local Federal Member of Parliament.
  • We have a petition - Please sign it! The link is on the right hand side of this page.
